Fiesole predates Florence itself — it was an important Etruscan settlement centuries before the Roman colony of Florentia was founded in the valley below — and today it functions as a hill town retreat that's almost absurdly close to the centre for what it delivers: cooler air, olive groves, Roman ruins, and one of the best views over Florence you'll find anywhere.
Getting there
ATAF city bus number 7 runs directly from the centre of Florence (near the Duomo/San Marco) up to Fiesole's main square in about 20–25 minutes, departing frequently — no train, no advance booking, no complicated logistics. It's genuinely one of the simplest "day trips" from Florence, closer to an extended half-day than a full expedition.
What to see
- The Roman archaeological area — a well-preserved Roman theatre still used for summer performances, along with baths and temple remains, set into the hillside.
- Fiesole Cathedral — a restrained Romanesque cathedral with a bishop's throne and a small museum of local archaeological finds.
- San Francesco Convent — a short, steep climb above the main square, with a small ethnographic and Egyptian collection and, more importantly, the best panoramic view of Florence available from any day trip on this list.
- The walk down to San Domenico — an alternative, quieter route back toward Florence past the Badia Fiesolana, a beautiful former abbey, for those who'd rather walk part of the way than bus the whole route.
Why it's worth doing even on a short trip
Unlike Siena, Pisa or Lucca, Fiesole doesn't require sacrificing a full day — it fits into a half-day, even a few spare hours in the late afternoon, and gives a genuinely different perspective (literally — the view) on the city you've been walking around at street level. It's a strong choice for anyone with only three or four days who still wants a taste of the countryside beyond Florence's walls.
